In honor of #BlackHistoryMonth’s final weekend, we’re taking a look at a few #mybkm moments with Fred Wilson’s Grey Area (Brown version). Make a trip to the Museum to see a variety of Black artistic talent all year round—including this work by Wilson. Made up of five portrait heads of the Egyptian queen Nefertiti, this provocative installation illustrates a value scale ranging in color from oatmeal to dark chocolate. By doing so, Wilson raises controversial questions about the racial identity of ancient Egyptians and encourages viewers to recognize how changes in context create changes in meaning.
