softhie:she is everything “you looked so much more intelligent to me before you equated health with weight”Gee, I wonder why someone would do that…BMI is a useful measure of overweight and obesity. It is calculated from your height and weight. BMI is an estimate of body fat and a good gauge of your risk for diseases that can occur with more body fat. The higher your BMI, the higher your risk for certain diseases such as heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, gallstones, breathing problems, and certain cancers.SourceIf you’re carrying many extra pounds, you face a higher-than-average risk of a whopping 50 different health problems. These health conditions include the nation’s leading causes of death—heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and certain cancers—as well as less common ailments such as gout and gallstones. Perhaps even more compelling is the strong link between excess weight and depression, because this common mood disorder can have a profound, negative impact on your daily life.Maintaining a healthy weight is important for health. In addition to lowering the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and high blood pressure, it can also lower the risk of many different cancers.Move more, eat less. Turning off the television and skipping the sugary drinks are two ways to get started.Your weight, your waist size, and the amount of weight gained since your mid-20s can have serious health implications. These factors can strongly influence your chances of developing the following diseases and conditions:Cardiovascular disease, heart attack, strokeDiabetesCancerArthritisGallstonesAsthmaCataractsInfertilitySnoringSleep apnea“I could’ve stayed the same and spiraled back into the eating disorder that almost killed me when I was 15.”An eating disorder you had while you were younger has precisely 0 things to do with proper exercise, and dieting. And oh by the way, the disorder didn’t almost kill you, you almost killed yourself. Personal responsibility. You should try it some time. “I could’ve kept starving myself and obsessively working out for hours everyday but it never would have led me to self love.”If that’s true-then you were doing it wrong. “Starving yourself” is not a remotely effective diet plan. Calories aren’t the enemy as long as you’re not getting them from a bad source (e.g. fast food, processed foods, sugary drinks, etc.). A diet should consist of healthy vegetables, fruits, and proper portioning of meats (vegan and vegetarian diets are a separate discussion). I won’t tell you what portion size is ideal because that can vary, but it is very, very difficult to become overweight by a diet consisting primarily of green vegetables. As far as working out for “hours everyday” it really shouldn’t take that long to maintain a healthy weight. Once again, you were doing it wrong. Achieving, and then maintaining a healthy size doesn’t mean you have to prepare for BUD/S. “No matter how much weight I lost there was always still something to hate.”Did you consider other ways to strengthen your self-esteem or did you run straight to Colonel Sanders? “And sure, people don’t NEED to gain weight to find their self-love,”No, they really don’t. Gaining weight will likely have the opposite effect. “this is just what my body needed to do to match up to my mental freedom”Once again, if what your diet and exercise routine that you described before is true then you were doing it wrong. “THIS IS MY HAPPY BODY.”Yeah, about that…>Depression and Weight GainA March 2010 review of 15 studies, published in the Archives of General Psychiatry, linked obesity to a greater risk of developing depression - and vice versa. But do people gain weight because they are depressed? Or do they become depressed because of the excess pounds they are carrying? No one knows.“It’s a chicken and the egg phenomenon,” says psychologist Leslie Heinberg, PhD, who directs the Bariatric and Metabolic Institute at the Cleveland Clinic. “But we do know that depression has lots of symptoms that can worsen obesity - appetite disturbances, lack of energy, lack of motivation to do things.”>Obesity and DepressionResearchers aren’t quite sure if obesity causes depression or if depression causes obesity, but the two are definitely linked. In fact, the two conditions are so intertwined that some are calling obesity and depression a double epidemic. Studies have found that 66 percent of those seeking bariatric, (weight loss) surgery have had a history of at least one mental health disorder. And of course, it doesn’t help that the medications people take for depression and other mental health issues can cause dramatic weight gain.As we can see, researchers claim it is possible that depression can lead to obesity and not vice versa. Though the studies haven’t concluded one way or the other, it is important to note that weight gain can result in adverse health effects which I listed above. TL;DRIf you want to take advantage of the abundance of food that exists in this part of the world then go right ahead. But you’re either ignorant and/or are wearing flaming pants if you’re suggesting that it’s outlandish to correlate higher BMI with the greater potential for negative consequences regarding health. -- source link
