Considerably Neglected AquariumWe don’t have any sort of normal filtration system, but have a carbon/zeolite system somewhat cobbled together. The blue buckets hold the medium which the Monstera deliciosa (the giant happy plants) thrives on. This is in the south-facing Solarium, and is part of our passive solar setup. The aquarium’s water is thermal mass - in addition to all the jugs filled with water below, to help modulate temperatures. This room worked very well last year. However we opted to move the cat door here and by cat door I mean a piece of acrylic on a hinge that allows all manner of cold air to blow in (visible in the lower right corner of the night picture)… so the aquarium finally got a heater. It heats the water in the aquarium, and the aquarium then heats the room which contains more than a few of our non-cold hardy plants.I’ll use the aquarium water to feed various nearby plants. They love it.The walls here aren’t sheetrock/gypsum, but thin plywood, painted in outdoor-rated paint. The metal going around the blue buckets is something V calls ‘plumbing strap’, and is screwed into the plywood. The white tendrils are some white corded thing, which are twisted about to hold up the black rubber tube which pumps the water from the aquarium into the buckets. The room itself is still unfinished, but I don’t think anything around here is. Always evolving…We like blue. -- source link
