fuckyeaharchaeology:The Capestrano Warrior is an over life-sized statue that was accidentally discovered by a farmer in the small Italian town of Capestrano in 1934. The statue dates to the 6th century BCE, and appears to be a depiction of a warrior, as evidenced by the body amour and the weapons that it carries. Based on the inscription along the side of the statue, it most likely served a funerary purpose and was probably created for royalty. The inscription, translated below, is interesting because it mentions the identities of the sculptor and a ruler:Me, a beautiful image made Aninis for King Nevio Pompuledio. The statue is of Picene origin. The Piceni were a non-Roman, Italic civilization that lived along the Adriatic Coast in Central Italy. Although they seemed to have first settled the area during the Iron Age, little is known about the people or the culture before their extensive contact with Greece and Rome in the 3rd century BCE. The Piceni are best known from ancient sources for their hostility and resistance against the Romans during the conquest of the Italian Peninsula. The Capestrano Warrior is one of the most remarkable and best-known examples of ancient Italic (Pre-Roman and Non-Etruscan) art that exists today. It is on display at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale d'Abruzzo.(image source) -- source link
