superwholocked-in-albion:Most underrated Disney character ever: the book shop owner from Beauty and the Beast.Back in like the colonial French time period (if I’m wrong, someone please correct me) this peasant French girl wouldn’t have been expected to read. She would have been expected to do what everyone in the town canonically thought she should do in the movie: marry Gaston, settle down, have his children and keep his home. Even the bimbettes, the girls who are Belle’s age and swoon over Gaston, can’t even DREAM of having any other lifestyle and think of her dreaming and reading as weird. But along comes the book shop owner and he caters to Belle’s dreams and love of reading in the half a minute he’s on screen just as much as Maurice. He understands that books and adventure are important to her and doesn’t try to repress that or call her odd like all the other townspeople do.I bet he taught Belle how to read and really fostered her love of books and challenged her intellectually her whole life, in a society where that was deemed a crazy thing to do, since she wasn’t expected to amount to anything more than a trophy wife. You can even see the look of pure joy on his face as she talks about her favorite books.Best Disney role model ever. -- source link
