foyernormanchapel:“He doesn’t know how to answer that question, because when we feel a connection to another human being who seems to understand us in a way that we are not often understood, it’s such a beautiful expression of connection. As broad as some of the human elements of the film avatar were, what really resonated with me was that the term of affection for them is, “I see you.” And there’s no greater expression of affection. That’s how Will felt with Hannibal — he felt seen. He felt naked and vulnerable, and yet understood in that. It’s a very addictive feeling to be in a relationship with somebody — whether it’s a friendship or a romance — where the dysmorphia of how you feel on the inside finally connects with someone else’s perception of you from the outside. It’s dizzying.”–Bryan Fuller (x)This for me really explains the allure of Hannibal, something that makes us go a bit obsessed with the show, to a level that even its superior cinematography, narrative power, great performance etc fail to warrant. For anyone who’s ever been ill at ease with themselves, ill at ease with the world, or unbearably lonely in a crowded room, it is Hannibal and Will’s recognition of and devotion to each other’s true selves that thrills us, strikes awe, and holds us enthralled. The reality is that the chances of finding someone who sees and loves us as we are, and who can bridge that painful gap between who we are/who as we present ourselves to be/who we feel as if we should/could be are simply near zero, so rare as to befit to the supernatural, miraculous realm rather than the mundane. It’s certainly one of the reasons why religion continues to be powerful; having failed to find that perfect other in another human being, people look to God instead, and that faith sometimes provides the feeling of being uniquely seen, understood, and beloved. In that sense what Will experienced–being seen and loved by Hannibal, being at the centre of his all-consuming attention and devotion–was indeed, as Bedelia said, akin to finding religion. And considering the fact that what Hannibal is is not exactly human–a wannabe demigod or little satan roaming the world having a heck of a time defying God–one could say that Will had found a god in Hannibal. And that divine love can manifest itself in both brutally creative and destructive forces, we know from mythology, scripture, and of course great tragic romances like Hannibal. -- source link
