A U.S. Navy Seabee Utilitiesman (UT) of the 34th Naval Construction Battalion works on a water purification supply system during the Solomon Islands Campaign. The Seabees (a heterograph of the first initials “C.B.” from the words Construction Battalion) were part of the U.S. Naval Construction Force (NCF). They were conceived of as a replacement for civilian construction companies working for the U.S. Navy after the United States was drawn into the war with the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The Seabees consisted of skilled workers that would were trained to drop their tools if necessary and take up their weapons at a moment’s notice to defend themselves. The concept model was that of a United States Marine Corps trained battalion of construction tradesmen (a military equivalent of those civilian companies) that would be capable of any type of construction, anywhere needed, under any conditions or circumstance.
