sedefscorner-blog:Roman artistry at its best!Bi-colored statue fragment, Roman, 2nd century AD, Istanbul Archaeology MuseumThis striking statuette was discovered in 1954 during foundation trench excavation of the Courthouse in Istanbul. According to the gallery label it was made in the ateliers in Byzantium. This statue may have adorned the palace of Lausus, a eunuch at the court of Theodosius II (AD 408-450) who was known to have a large sculpture collection. Although known to be a devout Christian he collected statutes taken out of the pagan temples of the empire. These statues had lost their religious associations by now, their meanings regarded allegorically and they were admired for their aesthetic value… Unfortunately, a fire that ravaged the city in AD 475 destroyed his palace along with his priceless statue collection. -- source link
