Ur-Nammu’s dedication tablet for the Temple of Inanna in Uruk (2112 -2095 BC).Ur-Nammu was the first king of the Ur III Period, named for the ThirdDynasty of Ur. During this time, there were many cultural advances,and a rebirth of Sumerian culture following the Akkadian and Gutianconquests.Ur-Nammu and his son Shulgi made cultural advancement the goal oftheir administrations. They maintained peace, and this allowed artand technology to flourish. Sumerian cities grew rich from trade.The Sumerians had a sexigesimal counting system (based on 60), andduring the Ur III Period, the night and day were divided into 12hours each. A “work day” with set limits on beginning and endingwas established, as well as the concept of “days off” forholidays.Ur-Nammu wrote the first Sumerian legal code, the precedent to themuch later Code of Hammurabi. The kings of Ur at this time had thedrive to regulate every aspect of human life.Shulgi continued his father’s policies and went further; he isconsidered the greatest of the Neo-Sumerian kings. -- source link
