State militia move in to crush the strike at the Homestead Works of the Carnegie Steel Company in 1892. The workers went on strike after a proposal from the company that their wages be reduced by 18%. After attempts to crush the strike with privately hired PInkerton security guards, the company asked the state of Pennsylvania to send in a militia armed with Gatling guns and rifles. The strikers eventually lost their struggle, and the Homestead strike led to a de-unionization movement all over the midwest. -- source link
