The Gorazde generators, early 1990s. Gorazde, a Bosnian city that was surrounded by Serbian troops during the wars in the former Yugoslavia, was cut off from the electric grid and other basic services. Water was taken by the bucket from the Drina River, and electricity came from homemade water wheels, anchored to bridges, that turned salvaged car alternators.
