Το δέντρο που πληγώναμε / The tree we hurt (1986), by Dimos AvdeliodesThe tree that we hurt, referring to the mastic tree takes place in the island of Chios in the 60s. The title refers to the “injuring” of the tree, in order to collect the “tears” of the aromatic resin that was for centuries the driving force of the island’s economy. The process, which the boy who narrates the story has to learn in order to help his mother earn their living, can be taken as a metaphor for all the small injuries, which produce however something precious and refined in us. The film focuses on all the typical sentiments of a childhood summer, depicting all the small joys of such a summer, like wandering around aimlessly under the sun, stealing fruit, playing with friends and doing anything and everything to annoy and cause problems to adults. But it also deals with complex emotions, such as the anxiety of separation from friends, the burden of more and more social expectations, and the first introspective thoughts towards injustice, compassion and cruelty.Despite being cast with mostly amateurs-people from the village- the film manages to be poignant and evocative. With a transcendental score, composed by Dimitris Papadimitriou, the film departs from both documentary and fiction, but it can be described as a reconstructed collective memory for all those who grew up on islands in the 60s. -- source link
