Skate After School is a non profit that my friends started to help spread skateboarding to underserved community’s. It’s really amazing how these dudes manage to structure a program in a way that schools feel comfortable having it as an extracurricular activity while still showing kids that the greatest part of skating is the freedom of expression. They’re not teaching rules or contest winning runs or how to get sponsored. They’re literally giving skateboards to kids who may have never even seen one before and letting them figure out for themselves how they want to use it and what they want to get out of it. Sure there are volunteers to help teach Ollie’s and kick turns if any kids have questions, but for one hour each week skateboards are handed out and a sort of beautiful mayhem ensues, just as it should when a room full of 30 kids have skateboards. I have personally seen the impact this program is having on the kids who regularly attend and I know with out a doubt that it’s really helping our community. So if you could please literally take 10 seconds to click this link and hit the vote button you could help S.A.S. win a huge grant from The Sheckler Foundation to maintain and expand their programming.
