books0977:A Woman Playing a Cithara (1896). Sir Edward Burne-Jones (English, 1833-1898). Tempera, gold paint, and watercolor on paper. Tate. For a number of his later studies Burne-Jones worked in gouache or gold paint on paper prepared with a coloured wash. The figure in this study may relate to the attendant musicians featured in the large painting depicting the sleep of King Arthur in Avalon (Museo de Arte, Ponce, Puerto Rico). Although the instrument is similar to the type of cithara found in ancient Greece, its form was probably invented by Burne-Jones himself. -- source link
