felixdeon:Xochipilli, the Prince of Flowers, is the Aztec god of music, joy, art, dance, song, hallucinogenic plants and the spirit journey on which they take you, the morning sun, and Two Spirit, or queer people. There is no gender in the Aztec language, and because Xochipilli is simultaneously Their sister, Xochiquetzal, the goddess of love, They are both male and female at once, and is said to possess a Cihuayollotl, a “Heart of a Woman.” I shall therefore refer to Them by this pronoun. Xochipilli appears with Their body painted with white glyphs which represent hallucinogenic plants. They have a white butterfly painted on Their mouth, which is a symbol of strength, bravery, and re-birth, and Their body is painted red, to symbolize solar heat, blood, and sacrifice. They appear before the faithful, and fill us with joy, as a divine gift of Xochipilli. Through sacred dance and art, inspired by Them, we achieve union with the divine. Through queer and Two Spirit identities, we are both male and female, and are brought close to Ometeótl, the source and being of all things. They are part of a living tradition. They are still worshiped in Mexico through sacred dance and ceremony. It is available as a print in my Etsy shop. Just click on the link below.
