J.D. Salinger’s novel, The Catcher in the Rye, was first published by Little, Brown and Company on this day in 1951. This iconic cover of a first edition volume is easily recognizable. However, Salinger was not always pleased with his novel’s cover art. He told the publishers of the first paperback edition that he would be happier if the book had no illustrated cover. The first publisher did not agree. Some sources indicate that in future contracts Salinger mandated that his works only have plain covers with simple text, indicating the title and the author.
