Click through for full story (4 pages).Okay guys, I’m gonna get real here because this is an issue I feel strongly about—as a self-employed woman in the US, health insurance is a real pain in the ass. You can skip over my story, but you should read this comic! Before being covered on my mom’s insurance, I had to buy my own individual insurance and it was just as expensive and unhelpful as Jen shows. Recently I had to apply again for individual health insurance—I turned 26 in april—and after filling out a tortuousapplication I was denied insurance because of mild pre-existing conditions which the insurance company termed “medically uninsurable” (exercise asthma? allergies? occasional knee pain that was fixed with shoe-inserts?) There is a federal ‘high risk’ insurance option open to me, but of course it’s more expensive and I have to go without insurance for 6 months to qualify. I found this comic to be extremely accurate and well-written, and definitely worth a quick read. It’s an issue that affects most artists who are self-employed in the US. Luckily, starting in 2014, insurance companies won’t be able to turn people down for pre-existing conditions….provided the 2010 health care reforms continue to be upheld…Gulp.*cries unintelligently* -- source link
