peashooter85:Medieval sword uncovered in Siberia which may at one time have belonged to Russian Czar Ivan the Terrible.https://siberiantimes.com/science/casestudy/features/f0013-could-rare-sword-have-belonged-to-ivan-the-terrible/Everyone keeps commenting and sending me messages about this post that go something like “Ivan the Terrible would have never used this sword! This is a 10th century Viking sword, Ivan was a 16th century Russian Tsar!”Yes, well Ivan was the last ruler of the Rurik Dynasty which was founded by Scandinavian settlers in the 9th century. And like most wealthy and powerful rulers, he probably would have owned a very large and impressive collection of antiques. There were antiques collectors then, just as there are antiques collectors now. It’s all speculation, but the belief is that Ivan gifted the sword from his collection to one of his commanders, Ivan Koltso, during the conquest of the Tatars. The sword ended up being lost and that’s how it ended up making it’s way to Siberia. This is nothing unprecedented in history. For example, the pride and joy of Napoleon Bonaparte’s large antiques collection was an ancient Roman gladiators helmet uncovered at Pompeii, which he often brought with him on campaign to show off to people. It’s now on display at the Louvre. -- source link
