midautumnnightdream:vapaus-ystavyys-tasaarvo:vapaus-ystavyys-tasaarvo:I found some canon era (-ish?) pictures of Les Halles! I just thought I’d share.Sources: [x] [x] [x] [x]Also I marked where the Rue de la Chanvrerie barricade would approximately have been in the first picture (the street isn’t visible but the roofs are kind of)I thought I’d reblog this for Barricade Day but also add a little comment:I know many of you know this already but the reason why I was SO EXCITED about these is because it’s SO HARD to find relevant pictures of this area. Les Halles only looked like this for like a couple of decades? It’s much easier to find pictures from either before or later. Most of the time if you see 19th century pictures of this area they’re from later on and look nothing like this. Also just look at this picture again:Firstly, this is such a good illustration of the canon era Halle aux Poissons. That’s the covered area on the left, the fish market.Secondly, you can see one of the porticos of Les Halles on the right.Thirdly, an actual canon era picture of a canon era street sign! (seriously I looked for one SO HARD and couldn’t find any and then I ran into this.) I mean it isn’t very good but at least you can see it!Fourthly, those houses in the background? Rue de la Chanverrerie was behind them. Those are the tall houses that were behind the barricade and separated it from Les Halles. These are the houses behind which Marius saw the glow that lead him to the barricade. Also I later found another painting by the same guy of the same place but from a different angle:I think this one gives you an even better idea of what the area was like? I don’t know about you but I can almost smell it. The smell of fish and bits of rotten food and open sewers. This was NOT a “nice” area. xD It was one of the poorest and dirtiest in Paris it seems.I can’t remember if I’ve linked this before or not (more likely it’s buried in my endless drafts) but if you want to read more about Les Halles in English I found this post (not on Tumblr *GASP*) https://voony.wordpress.com/2012/01/23/paris-les-halles-introduction-to-its-anatomy/ Ooh, I was looking up stuff about Les Halles for Fic Reasons and these are amazingly helpful!Digging around wikipedia also gave me this very useful scheme for keeping track of things:(Also adding the relevant map for clarity and comparison)Galignani guide offers also a fairly detailed description of the different buildings and activities.Oh and here’s another depiction of Le Carreau des Halles: -- source link
