theveryworstthing:some orcs and rough lore for said orcs from patreon~*:・゚✧*:・゚✧I have a lot of goblin designs to polish and post for Goblin Month but instead of working on any of those I spent the day messing with possible orc designs. To be fair, the first orc I sketched was supposed to be a goblin but it was huge next to the other goblin designs and so I decided to call it an orc. Because when you think about it, orcs are just really big goblins. The rough lore for orcs in the Small Guide universe is that they’re basically evolution hitting the panic button. Goblins are hyper-adaptable and sometimes their environment, magical or otherwise, can have just as much impact on their abilities and appearances at birth as their parents’ DNA. For example, it is not uncommon for goblins immigrating to areas with heavy flooding or large bodies of water to have amphibious children. That’s just how the magic in their bodies works. So when an orc is born to goblin parents, that’s nature looking at an Upcoming Situation and going, “forget subtle tweaks, we’re just gonna throw a sledgehammer at this problem and run”. It’s seen as a blessing since they are a general early warning system for universal fuckery. Orcs take some biological attributes from their birth parents but there are consistent quirks that make them distinct from regular goblins. 1. They’re always huge, born abnormally big with the average adult orc easily growing to twice the height of an average adult goblin. 2. They usually have features borrowed from large local animals. Rhinos, tigers, boars, whales, elephants, bears, giant salamanders, there are even human-like ones that get born in cities with mixed populations. 3. For some reason the vast majority of them are green. No one knows why, but some speculate that green is the color that pisses off Universe Bullshit the least so it’s yet another bit of protection. The shades of green vary greatly but jade green and mossy tones are common. 4. Scary good at magic and could absolutely toss you like a frisbee for fun. Orcs have a big enough population that they’ve developed their own culture parallel to goblin culture by now, and while some orcs happily stay with their goblin families forever others seek out nearby orcish tribes to live in once they’re adults. It’s hard living in a world half your size after all. I’m still working on the rest of their lore, but I like how these two came out. -- source link
