Extremo da terra (el fin del mundo), Fisterra, Galicia, 2001.For many centuries Fisterra (Finisterre), a peninsula jutting into the Atlantic in Galicia, was thought to be the westernmost point of Continental Europe, though it is not even the westernmost point in Spain, the honor held by Cape Touriñán which is a few kms further north on the Galician coast. Still the severity of the point and its atmosphere make the name powerful. This cross marks the promontory of the Fisterra peninsula which is roughly a half degree further east than the true westernmost point of continental Europe, Cabo de Rocha in Portugal about 300km south south west. Fisterra is also considered the traditional end of the Camino Santiago as pilgrims walked west a few days from Santiago de Compostela to see the end of the earth and to acquire a scallop shell to mark completion of their journey. -- source link
