It doesn’t scare me.” —Jean Moulin, 1941history meme : 06/∞ men | J e a n M O U L I N Jean Moulin was born on 20 June 1899 in Beziers, south west France. In 1918, he enlisted in the army. After World War One, he studyied law at Montpellier and later entered the civil service. In 1930 he became the youngest subprefect and in 1937 the youngest prefect in all of France.When the Germans occupied his département in 1940, he refused to cooperate with the German Army, and was arrested and tortured by the Gestapo. While in his cell he attempted to kill himself. After recovering he was released from prison.From then on, he devoted his life to resisting the Germans. In September 1941, he was smuggled out of France to London to meet Charles de Gaulle, leader of the ‘Free French’. In January 1942, he was parachuted back into France, to set up an organised Resistance movement. His code name was ‘Max’.Shortly after setting up the National Council of the Resistance in 1943 and becoming its first head, Moulin was betrayed and on 21 June he was captured. He was interrogated by the Gestapo in Lyon and Paris but he gave no name or information about the Resistance. He died as a result of torture on 8 July 1943 on a train taking him to Germany.Ashes that were presumed to be his were later transferred to the Panthéon of Paris on 19 December 1964. -- source link
