this is something that i whipped up for a thread where i offer critique to people, but i think the idea is solid enough to put it here! i always harp on about doing life drawings and studies of lots of different animals, and why it’s important to avoid using other peoples’ art for primary reference. the reason is this: whereas (say) a cat is something that exists in 3D, so you can build up a picture of the volumes by looking at it from lots of different angles, a piece of art is always going to be flat and 2D. any time you’re drawing (say) one of the dragon breeds in 3D, you’re having to do a lot of extrapolation and filling in the blanks. the more reference points you have to help with that - eg, by having good knowledge of how real animals are structured - the easier a time you’ll have, and the more 3D and cohesive your dragons will be. -- source link
