The Brooklyn Museum Libraries and Archives were recently given an incredible book entitled Genealogy of the old and very illustrious family of Schenck van Nydeck (Nydegge) begining [sic] with the year 1368. A handwritten manuscript, complete with illuminations, detailing the family tree of the Schenck family from 1368 to 1872 (with a few additional entries ranging into the 20th century), it is an invaluable record for genealogical research. The manuscript is filled with fascinating information that sheds light on the Schenck families in Europe and in America. Although most of the pages simply present basic information on birth, death, marriage, and children, many give fuller descriptions—for example, Christoffel Schenck van Nydeck of the 17th century is described as “very arrogant, so that he was at variance with everyone, and got duel upon duel”—and a few give a far more detailed and entertaining account of the lives of the Schencks. Not all of these men and women are direct ancestors of the Brooklyn Schencks, but there are very interesting stories found in these pages of text and images. Over the next few months, I will tell you about some of these characters.Posted by Katy Christensen -- source link
