elucipher:vaeltaa:Apéritif VS the upcoming Relevés. Seems we’re getting a cozy nostalgia trip revisiting the infamous breakfast scene from the pilot, but it’s interesting to see just how much things have changed, like the curtain is almost completely pulled back now, bathing them both in brilliant light. Their positioning and postures are almost identically parallel to the first breakfast, even down to similar clothing, but the light touches them equally. They’ve become “friendly”. Some secrets are shared and out in the open, while others remain in the dark, edging the shadowed line. Food for thought. Also chilling because that latter scene takes place in what looks like a hospital room, with the camera perched on the hospital bed (implying that the audience viewpoint is just as ‘ill’ and unstable as Will?)—IV drip behind Will; hospital admission band around his wrist. Hannibal has succeeded in removing Will from a place of comfort and into a place for people in (physical, psychological) crisis; indeed, a place where people are defined by the crisis that they’re having.Hannibal is the the very reason for that crisis, and yet Will receives him as a trusted friend and confidant; Hannibal has made him believe that the lion in the room is his own mind, and not the serial killer sitting opposite him. When in fact this is probably just another power-play by Hannibal, a way of keeping his grip on Will as absolute as possible (that earlier scene was a first move to worm his way into Will’s life and look at how successful he’s been). And it also reminds us of Hannibal’s response to Will’s hostile “I don’t find you that interesting”—“You will”; yes, Will certainly finds Hannibal interesting now, but for all the wrong reasons. Also, look at the change in body language. In Apéritif, Will’s leaning back and away from Hannibal, with his knees spread to try to assert greater dominance and his hands almost in fists; Hannibal is very upright but still leaning towards him, keeping his hands to himself. In Relevés, Will is leaning forward, looking friendly and relaxed, and Hannibal is casually reaching across the table into his space. There’s no way to tell right now whether Hannibal’s picking something up or putting it down, but I like to think he’s passing something to Will, which is to say putting himself in charge. “Eat your breakfast.” -- source link
