Model sheets from the Ub Iwerks Studio, 1930s. Iwerks, co-creator of Mickey Mouse, left Disney in 1930 but was never able to achieve much commercial success on his own. The studio folded in 1936. That doesn’t mean the Iwerks cartoons aren’t worth your time though. If the female figurine in those model sheets looks familiar: that’s the work of Grim Natwick, Betty Boop’s father. (That Jazz era drawing is also by him.) The other animator is Berny Wolf, a man who deserves more recognition (he was one of the animators responsible for Disney’s Jiminy Cricket).I’m quite amazed what they got away with, by the way—the Iwerks shorts contain some naughty stuff, even for 1930s standards.
