Whatever his origins, however, he was a man of ambitions as towering as his impressive stature. Unable to inherit his father’s crown, for the tradition stated a king must conquer his own lands; he claimed thirty kingdoms as his own (including Sorelais and the North of Wales) before turning his sights on Logres, the realm of the King called Arthur. Galehaut was well loved by his subjects due to his chivalry, fair-mindedness, and generosity, and his sturdy position plus the love of his people made him a terrible threat to Arthur and Camelot as a result.During a fierce, though short, campaign, the Lord of the Isles became awed by the martial prowess and beauty of a knight called Lancelot. And although it was clear to all that victory was within the reach of Galehaut’s men, their leader nonetheless surrendered certain victory at Lancelot heartfelt supplication. An agreement for peace was struck, and though he lost the war Galehaut won the friendship of not only Lancelot, but the King and his wife as well. And thus, a bond deeper than mere companionship was fastened between the two warriors. Galehaut, now allied with the high king, aided Arthur in his crusade against the Saxons, where he discovered his friend’s love for the king’s wife, Guinevere, and the affair between them. Such a love was abominable, however, and after months of covering for their trysts, he offered (perhaps selfishly) his companion a place at his own court in the attempt at distancing the two.The battles won, Galehaut returned home with Lancelot to discover his castle collapsed while he was away. His adviser, a vate and seer known as Sebille, warned the king that the loss of his castle was an omen of his demise and that his affair with Lancelot would lead him to sorrow and death. But with the ecstasy of love and comradeship in his veins, it was impossible for Galehaut to be upset about his crumpled home, much less heed Sebille’s words of warning. Lancelot remained in Sorelais and assisted in the reconstruction while their relationship grew, until word of an imposter in Camelot reached the Isles. Another woman with both Guinevere’s name and face had taken the Queen’s place and bewitched Arthur into imprisoning his former wife as a witch. Lancelot left the Isles at once, painfully reminding Galehaut of his love for another, to save the true queen from burning at the stake. With the vate’s words ringing in his ears, Galehaut rode back to Camelot to aid in Lancelot’s bid to rescue her. Lancelot’s failure to save Guinevere lead to the death of many knights, including Gawain’s brothers, the illumination of the rendezvous he shared with the queen, a declaration of war against the former knight personally, and his own grief stricken madness. He began wandering Britain while both the might of Camelot and Galehaut searched for him from conflicting sides. The lord of the Isle’s own spirit began to wane as he tirelessly sought Lancelot; the loss of Guinevere and Arthur’s wrath affecting him almost as adversely as Lancelot’s abandonment. When he found the fallen knight at long last, however, it was with the pressure of Arthur’s forces at his back. Covering Lancelot’s escape, Galehaut perished in a conflict between Arthur and his men…taking several knights with him and forcing the decimated ranks to return to Camelot for reinforcements. The grief Lancelot would come to experience after those events would be unlike anything he’d ever felt, but rather than drive deeper into madness, his sadness cleansed him and gave him clarity. The knight regained some of himself in the aftermath of Galehaut’s demise, recovered the fallen king’s body, and joined a hermitage in the isles where he remained until his own death.Lancelot, at the end of his own life, was buried next to Galehaut in the magnificent tomb that - as younger men – they’d built to consecrate and eternalize their companionship.tl;dr - Gay/interracial knights! -- source link
