sirfrogsworth:noblexcelestemorningstar:conservativemalarkey:sirfrogsworth:Wouldn’t this split the conservative vote in half and make them lose more elections? Should I be rooting for this to happen? Or is there some terrible aspect to this I’m not seeing? the terrible aspect is that thanks to the way the American two-party system works, generally when a party splits like this, one half of the party diesthe real risk here is that America winds up with the “hardline fascist” party and the “everyone else” partyThat and having an established, mainstream fascist party like this is uh… bad. Very bad. Normalization of fascism and like, possibility of real power being taken bad. So do you not feel the current Republican party is not that already? They all voted for Trump. They all approved of Trump. At a rate of 95% I believe. Only 7 GOP senators voted to convict. How is the current Republican party not a mainstream fascist party that is normalized?I’m just wondering if we had two smaller fascist parties who can’t get elected might allow them to kill each other off. I have no idea if that would actually work, but I also don’t know anything else that might work. It’s all very disheartening. For a somewhat less extreme comparison, the libertarians and republicans co-existed (still do really). And in the past there were certainly republican politicians and voters who leaned more toward libertarian than republican, but they ran as republicans and/or voted for republican candidates because there was no way in hell for a libertarian to get elected to a major office. So if there is a republican party split, eventually it’ll probably settle to one party being the party that everyone on the conservative side votes for and the other side being the one that some of that side go “hey guys what if we all vote for party B this year? It’s our year, I feel it. No? OK, party A then…”There may very well be a few elections where it’s unclear which party would be which, or perhaps is is clear to everyone else but followers of the losing party haven’t admitted it yet, and there would be a major vote split. But ultimately, one of those conservative parties would have to decline to a libertarian level of relevance. The occasional small spoiler effect that shaves off a couple percentage points may still pop up though. Of course as long as the Electoral College exists, such a scenario could still flip an election, similar to that whole Nader thing in 2000. As for normalization, it would only normalize the dumpster-supporters if their side ends up being the relevant conservative party. -- source link
