{Today’s Friday Feature: New York-based Rafael de Cardenas and his firm Architecture-at-Large. Since I featured the Baccarat Hotel recently, thought I’d share his design of the luxury brand’s retail flagship on Madison Avenue. Appropriately… faceted and rich-looking.} The design at Baccarat’s new Madison Avenue flagship extracts the delicate yet rigid details of finely cut crystal and executes them in an architectural manner. A bright, two-story glass frit facade is patterned with arrays of triangles, creating a 3-dimensional illusion on a 2-dimensional surface. Interior entry walls are wrapped in faceted strips of Macassar Ebony and mirror. This geometry reflects both the natural light from the facade and tiers of grand crystal chandeliers. Nordic Black granite is used as a high-contrast backdrop to display Baccarat crystal, while niches of white gold leaf highlight special products. Nods to classical French design, such as diamond wood flooring and ceiling molding details, infuse the space throughout. The unique application of these signature moves both broadens the brand’s appeal to a younger audience while simultaneously highlighting the craftsmanship and heritage of Baccarat crystal, reinforcing their existing client base. -- source link
