meandmybentley: I have always been fascinated by old building conversions. The authenticity and character produced from appropriating an historic structure is near impossible to replicate with a ground-up development. I love the notion of dismantling layers of a building’s history, baring its soul, then preserving and prolonging its story by injecting a new life in the form of liveable space. The Lower East Side townhouse, designed by Labo Design Studio, was once an old Jewish school and now boosts a two story family home with an art gallery on the ground floor. Wanting to keep any new additions to a minimum, numerous elements of the original structure have been refreshed and integrated. The modernity of freshly coated white walls contrast beautifully against exposed beams and bare floor to ceiling brick walls. The overall styling of the apartment may appear spontaneous, but rest assure, nothing is unintentional. Throughout the home, a careful selection of eclectic, mismatched and furniture from old and new worlds assist in bridging the gap between the past and present. #meandmybentley -- source link
