A 14th century illumination of Robert GuiscardYet another prominent figure of Hauteville family, but this time also a bit more brutish. He was the eldest brother of count Roger and came to southern Italy in the end of 1040s. During the early years of his illustrious career Robert was a adventurer, a mercenary and occasionally even a leader of road robber gang. He rose though quickly in prominence and managed eventually to carve himself a realm of his own. Robert’s later deeds include e.g, the sack of Rome and he also helped his brother in conquest of Sicily. Robert had also plans for the crown of Byzantium but this came to nothing. Robert’s nickname refers to a “cunning” or “sly” person a feature that was certainly helpful in 11th century Italy;).edit. Bohemond of Taranto, one of the leaders of first crusade, was Robert’s son (illegitimate?) -- source link
