prokopetz:bogleech:endersands:youngstero:the 1993 live action mario movie is so wild i watched it last night and i had to make this postLets not forgetI remember exactly when this movie came out, and people tried to take it for the “Mario movie” it was marketed and titled as, with all the confusion and mockery that entails. But by today’s geek standards, its basically just an interpretive AU populated by loose gijinka characters in a world that bizarrely draws some themes and terminology from a classic video game series. It’s kind of neat when you take it for its own entity, it’s just too bad it’s not a very good movie otherwise.I still find this film utterly inexplicable.Like, it was totally common in those days to license geek media and slap the title on an unrelated project already in development in order to leverage the name recognition, and if that’s what had happened here, it would explain everything - except that can’t be what happened here, because it’s just too thematically coherent. For all its flaws, every element of the film is precisely crafted to form an elaborate set of parallels with Mario lore as it had been established in the early 90s. There’s even references to stuff from obscure spin-off media, and weird-ass details that never made it into the English instruction manuals. That means that someone with extensive knowledge of the Mario franchise, including detailed familiarity with the Japanese source material, looked at this project with a clear and sober mind and thought:You know what the best way to translate these bright, whimsical children’s games to film is?A cyberpunk dystopia AU!And then managed to convince someone to give them forty-eight million dollars to make it a reality. This film may well be the most expensive fanfic ever written. -- source link
