This is Eugen Sandow (1867 - 1925), the “father of modern bodybuilding.” He toured America where people were more interested in watching his bulging muscles than him lifting weights. He visited museums and measured the muscles of ancient Greek statues, then built his body to their exact proportions. He wrote a magazine on physical culture that first used the term bodybuilding. Sandow was even named “special instructor in physical culture” to King George V! -- source link
