Anoutcrop of Silurian limestone in Saaremaa (Estonia).Thislimestone formed during the Silurian period of the Paleozoic Era,about 419 – 443 million years ago. There were six major landmassesduring the Paleozoic, each with different parts of modern continents. For example, the west coast of Northern America ran east-west alongthe equator, and Africa was at the South Pole.Alonethe margins of these continents, a great deal of mountain-buildingwas going on. There were many incursions and retreats of shallowseas across their interiors, and large limestone outcrops such asthis one show these periodic incursions. -- source link
