Today’s compilation:The Braindance Coincidence2001IDM / Electro / Breakbeat / Downtempo / Trip Hop / Techno / ExperimentalNo lie; I was really taken by surprise by this comp. I mean, I was expecting it to be incredible; it’s Aphex Twin’s lauded Rephlex label, after all. But the comp is called The Braindance Coincidence, and braindance is basically another term for IDM, so I kinda just assumed that this comp was gonna be a heaping pile of mind-altering IDM chaos. And it actually turned out to be far more than that. Discogs lists this comp as being IDM and experimental, but it turns out there’s also electro, breakbeat, trip hop, downtempo, and some techno as well. And a good chunk of it’s even danceable!; like the kind of stuff an early aughts hipster on the indie dance beat at Pitchfork would gush over. Gotta say, was not expecting an indie tinge to this at all. But it’s there and I for sure dig it .Three tracks in particular on here blew my fucking mind, by the way. Cylob’s “Rewind” features that Speak-n-Spell voice that Benny Benassi would cash in on a few years later with things like Wendy’s ads (???), but Cylob got his Speak-n-Spell to fucking rap on here. What, dude?! µ-Ziq (Mike Paradinas) went and gave us a sandwich with literally everything on it with a high-powered and fast-moving piece of magnificently layered and danceable IDM, yielding one of the greatest electronic tunes I’ve ever heard in my damn life .And Squarepusher remixed himself (his Chaos A.D. moniker) and delivered a stunning hybrid beast of melancholy acid and breakbeat hardcore / drum n bass. And as you listen to it, you need to picture the curvature of a planet, because the core has the breakbeat / drum n bass parts and the mantle and crust features the melancholy acidity.
