deflect:oops then i wanted to babble about their drift(s)So what interests me is the similarities. The first cap is from newton’s solo drift, but look at the scientists in the bg: They look like they’re laughing at newton. They are doubtless dismissing him, whether because of his age or words. In the second pic, from the newtmann drift, it’s clear the older students young Hermann attempts to teach also jeer. The next few frames I super adore, because if we can assume the movie presented Drifting in that same attracted same, like drawing out like — well, even if it wasn’t suggesting one brought on the other, the similarities are there. Hermann sits alone, and Newton speaks alone. PLUS THE FUN OVERLAY. One obviously suggests more pain than the other, but one gets, or I at least get, a sense of…The next frames are Hermann with the slide rule (then the suggestive overlay of a nervous system over Hermann’s profile, then Newton getting a tattoo), and I don’t mean to suggest that everything in their drift is pain sadness loneliness oh nooooo poor wounded dork souls oh noooo everything is terribleThe numbers and phials and kaiju anatomy and passionate recording, slide rule, obviously there’s also dedication to work, passion for their subjects, etc. That said, I still get a sense of isolation, of having been the only ones, of having been, one way or another, rejected by their peers (by everyone), and coming to be accustomed to that, and to build their respective defenses and offenses (whether it is Hermann’s distance by numbers, or Newton’s brash disregard), and to expect to do it alone, or to be challenged.Which makes it significant, yes, that they do this together, and I’m not even making this a romantic statement. Nor the fact that, they could do this, because, in fact, they have been together. There is that reflexive trust. They are colleagues, and best friends, of a particularly… uh, unique kind. Two sides of the same coin, two halves of the same brain, and you get the picture. -- source link
