As with Lauren Faust’s earlier series, My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, each of the protagonists in the revamped DC Super Hero Girls is meant to represent a different “type” of young person, be they vaguely gothy nerd (Barbara Gordon), shy sciencey type (Karen Beecher), social activist (Jessica Cruz) etc. With Zatanna, she is cast in the role of Artist™, with her focus on showmanship, presentation etc. However, another big chunk of her characterisation is that she’s the Rich Friend, as shown through her being kind of a snob, arriving to school in a limousine , eating at super-fancy restaurants etc.Now some elements of the characters’ characterisation within the show differ from their comicbook counterparts, for example, Jessica Cruz in the comics suffers from anxiety but in the show Karen does instead, does this mean the presentation of Zatanna here is similarly changed in the adaptation?Err… Yes and No.DCSHG Zatanna is WAY more pretentious and vain than Original!Zatanna (albeit still nice and generous when the mood takes her) but her being the richest amongst her circle of friends IS something the two versions share. For example, in the comics as Zatanna is a celebrity (a second generation one at that, what with her dad also being a famous celebrity stage magician/superhero) so she’s one of the few characters in the DCU who directly profits from licensing her image (at least successfully, Booster Gold does too but only ever seems to loose money).Besides this joke in Black Canary and Zatanna: Bloodspell, in Zee’s solo series, the shear volume of money she has proves a point of contention with her less successful cousin Zachary Zatara, when the pair are pursued by Mammon, the Demonic Representation of Wealth. So yeah, Zatanna being the Rich Friend is (or was, not so sure about the new continuity) somewhat canon, both through her inheritance from her dad (who moved in the same social circle as people like the Waynes and Kanes) AND through various fees, licencing agreements and so on.It should be pointed out that, like comic!Zatanna, DCSHG’s Zatanna DOES actually have a job (she’s shown working as a children’s entertainer, this being very early in her entertainment career) so I’m mildly less inclined to be annoyed at her then if she was just sat around living off of other people’s money instead. -- source link
