Kintsugi repair bowls, Japan. Kintsugi is the Japanese art/tradition of repairing broken ceramics using lacquer mixed or dusted with gold (or occasionally other metals), and dates from at least the 16th century - an age when ceramics were highly prized and not just tossed on the rubbish heap when smashed. These became part of the Japanese aesthetic concept of ‘wabi sabi’, which values simplicity and imperfection.Such items became prized, and inevitably led to ceramics being deliberately broken so they could be repaired this way. Early proponents were not pleased with such deliberate acts to create these however, and were condemned as dishonest. -- source link
