Mike Huckabee, Asshole of the Day for February 2, 2015When he ran for president in 2007-08, Mike Huckabee had a nice guy image. Of course it would turn out that he was a regular sexist homophobe like so many others, but at the time his bigotry wasn’t out in front.It is now. For the last few years he’s shown his nasty side, particularly when it comes to denying gays the same marriage rights he himself enjoys. And here’s the latest example:Huckabee said that for him, same sex marriage is a religious issue.“This is not just a political issue. It is a biblical issue. And as a biblical issue, unless I get a new version of the scriptures, it’s really not my place to say, ‘Okay, I’m just going to evolve.’ It’s like asking somebody who’s Jewish to start serving bacon-wrapped-shrimp in their deli. … or asking a Muslim to serve up something that is offensive to him or to have dogs in his backyard,” he said. “We’re so sensitive to make sure we don’t offend certain religions, but then we act like Christians can’t have the convictions that they’ve had for over 2,000 years.”Everyone knows Jews don’t eat pork, and we would never make them eat it. But this analogy of Huckabee’s is way off. Asking a Christian baker to bake a wedding cake for a gay couple is not the same as making a Jew serve pork. Pork is against the Jewish religion, but cake is not against Christianity.For Huckabee’s analogy to work, you’d have to be forcing the Christian baker to be having gay sex in his bakery, or forcing him to allow the customer to have gay sex there. No one is making them do that, or even suggesting it.And don’t tell me it’s about them not serving people who sin. Baker’s don’t ask if a cake will be brought home and eaten by an unmarried couple before they have sex, which is also a sin. Mike Huckabee never once suggested that a Christian baker not serve a straight person who may have committed a grave sin, or intended to. Huckabee only wants Christians to be able to discriminate against gays. And for that, he is the Asshole of the Day.It is Mike Huckabee’s fifth time being named Asshole of the Day.
