wonder-doughnut:I regret to announce that Charles E. Scovil has passed away onNovember 10th, 2020. He was 92-years-old. Charles was a former president of the American Association of Variable Star Observers (AAVSO)(1973-1975), former director of the Stamford Observatory, and major contributor to the AAVSO star charts. Thank you for your contributions to the field of Astronomy, grandpa. You made me proud to be a member of this family. Thank you, guys. I appreciate you saying something (Sorry it took so long for me to reply, too. I wasn’t sure what to say).I initially didn’t want to talk much about my family online because it would give away too much of my identity, but I feel that my grandpa deserves to be talked about, and deserves to be remembered. To this day, I still don’t entirely understand what he did, but I know it was valuable. He spent 30 years mapping the stars by hand. He wasn’t paid to do it, he just did it out of pure passion for astronomy. He mapped the entire sky. Here’s one of his star maps, I have no idea what I’m looking at, so this is just some random segment. This was created long before the advent of digital data, so we have the whole map printed. -- source link
