Leucadendron salignum ‘Summer Red’Many plants in the Protea Family have spectacular flower clusters, but this is not so true of the genus Leucadendron. Their little flower heads look almost cone-like, but they often have very colorful modified leaves around the flower head, and these can make a wonderful display. The plant pictured is a form of Leucadendron salignum, which has a large area of occurrence in the southwestern part of South Africa, from Ceres (a little northeast of Cape Town) eastward to Port Elizabeth. As the cultivar name ‘Summer Red’ implies, this plant was selected for its vivid red bracts - the modified leaves at the tips of the stems. The bracts clasp the flower heads, hiding them from view.-Brian -- source link
