Cuadecuc, Vampir (Pere Portabella, 1971)“In 1970, Spanish filmmaker Jesus Franco filmed his version of Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula. During filming, another Spanish writer-director, Pere Portabella, followed Franco and his crew. Portabella documented primarily the stage direction and actors Christopher Lee, Soledad Miranda, and Maria Rohm, and filmed original footage of the Catalonian countryside. Two distinct films emerged from this production as a result: Franco’s Count Dracula, and Portabella’s Cuadecuc Vampir. The latter film is essentially a documentary, but upon an even cursory viewing it emerges as a metafilm, or at least as a documentary that embraces metafilmmaking. As a documentary, Cuadecuc routinely draws the viewers attention to the fact that a film is being shot: lighting and camera rigs, makeup effects, props, and visual effects are all present. The actors are aware of the fact that Portabella is filming them, with Lee, Miranda, and Rohm all acknowledging Portabella’s presence on the set and at times facing directly into Portabella’s camera.” [x] -- source link
