#OTD 9/23/1952 Senator Richard Nixon, candidate for Vice President, gave his famous “Checkers Speech” from the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, California. Not to be confused with the landmark theater of the same name on Hollywood Blvd, the El Capitan that was used by Nixon for his speech is located on Vine Street. It is now known as the Avalon but was previously named the Hollywood Playhouse, the Federal Theatre Project, the Jerry Lewis Theatre, the Hollywood Palace, and, simply, the Palace.
