uwmspeccoll:A Henty a WeekThis week, in Both Sides the Border: A Tale of Hotspur and Glendower G.A. Henty takes us back to the first years of 15th century England, a time he calls “the most stirring in the history of England” in a tale of a young man caught up in the border wars of England, Scotland, and Wales. This particular publication was produced in 1898 by Charles Scribner’s Sons and includes 12 illustrations by Ralph Peacock. So far, we’ve featured one other Henty publication with this same illustrator, you can check it out here. In addition to his work as a book illustrator, Peacock was a portrait painter. His most famous portrait was that of two sisters sitting together and simply titled, “The Sisters.” It gained notoriety after an American engineer saw Peacock’s painting and was so captivated by the younger sister’s beauty that he declared he would marry her—and did. The illustrations in Both Sides of the Border certainly demonstrate Peacock’s skills as a portraitist!– Katie, Special Collections Graduate Intern Can’t get enough Henty?
