mingsonjia: semprebrava: mingsonjia: Chinese Opera Artists Hopefully one day my Chinese will be.good enough to appreciate the various forms of Chinese opera…. Visually, I think it’s stunning! #Chinese opera #the tags weren’t clear… #is this 粤剧,越剧,京剧 or something else..? Good question :) from the clothing and makeups, this should be Peking opera. Peking opera has a heavier makeup tradition. The faces of the Hua Dan are much paler, and the pink area around the eyes are much bigger and deeper than 越剧 Yueju and 昆曲 Kunqu, very similar to 豫剧 Yu Ju. I’m not sure about 粤剧 the Cantonese opera. Here’re some pics of Yueju and Kunqu. These two are kinda similar. I have to say the last three pics of the original post are a little confusing. Generally Yueju and Kunqu have gentle colored costumes like light pink, light blue etc like in those pics. Peking opera has very bright colored costumes. But there’re exceptions for several specific characters. Mostly the differences of these operas are still on the vocal methods and the dialects they speak when the artists perform. Yueju uses the Wu dialect of Zhejiang’s shaoxing area. It sounds smooth, soothing, sometimes it has a feminine feature. So there’re not a lot of male Yueju opera artists. It’s really hard for males to handle. Peking opera sounds high pitched, intense. These two were both developed from Kunqu which is the oldest form of Chinese opera. -- source link
