“Cotton Queen” by NastassiaFor the last day of black history month, I’d like to share with you guys a reflective piece I created. Over 4 large bags of cotton and 40+ hours of labor, this piece is titled “Cotton Queen”. I was doing a bit of researching on black history month when I stumbled upon this statement.. “Cotton prolonged America’s most serious social tragedy, slavery, & slave produced cotton caused the American Civil War.” I was immediately triggered. Our value as a people was so great it caused an entire war, because they knew if they lost their dominance over us, America’s economy and hand in textile trading would greatly decline. Black people were tortured, beaten, raped, killed, and treated worse than the dirt under slave owners feet because of a simple textile, & America’s want to produce more without losing money. I looked up at this wedding dress I originally had for another project and decided to fill the entire thing with pieces of cotton. For our ancestors, this was a minuscule way for me to show my condolences to all the hardships they faced and still face today. We’ve still got a long way to go, this is only the beginning.
