The works in Disguise: Masks and Global African Art are organized around the idea that masquerade is always an art of becoming.Nandipha Mntambo stands in an abandoned bullfighting arena in Mozambique, formerly a Portuguese colony. Bullfights introduced new layers to the complex meanings surrounding bulls throughout southern Africa—regarded by many as repositories of power and masculinity. Mntambo tackles these histories to become another kind of matador, hauntingly re-creating their gestures while upsetting the racial and gendered binaries that were used to order such spaces.Posted by Kevin D.
