a-gnosis:Marble copy of the colossal chryselephantine statue of Athena Parthenos (Athena the Virgin). The original was made by Phidias in the 5th century BCE, and stood inside the Parthenon on the Athenian Acropolis. Athena is holding a Nike (Victory) in her right hand and supports her shield, which rests against a snake, with the other. She wears a helmet decorated with a sphinx and two winged horses. The original statue is lost, but a number of ancient reproductions have survived. This Roman copy from the 3rd century CE is generally considered to be the most faithful version. -- source link
