cowboywannabe:xicamatl:hay-jud:kispesan:Short answer, anon: YES! Trickster is, without a doubt, my favourite thing to come out of 2020. I am SO glad it’s already been renewed for a second season.Trickster is currently available on CBC and CBC Gem in Canada, and will be airing on the CW starting in January. You can read more about the show here! One last thing I really want to stress again: you can tell that an Indigenous hand is all aspects of the creation of this show. The fact that there are Native people behind the camera as well really does shine through, and I love hearing the actors talk about how that made a positive impact on the experience, too.@xicamatl hi recent follower and the anon who sent you a bunch of filipino stuff recently (lmao fuck spain/usa colonialism) but I thought this might interest you and your friends. pls boost this show! Thank you for recommending it![image description: a series of images like a slide show about the TV show Trickster. The first slide shows a grey scale picture of a young Indigenous actor crouching, colorful vertical lines edited in over his body. the text reads: “Why you should totally watch Trickster” with the subtext, “This is Indigenous Gothic - spirits, ancient magic, deadly rites of passage - in a coming of age story unlike any you’ve ever seen.”The next slide reads, “So what’s the premise?” next to a photo of a book, Son of a Trickster, by Eden Robinson. The text reads, “Trickster is based on the praiseworthy novel series by Eden Robinson. Jared is a high school kid struggling to keep his dysfunctional family afloat when a whole new kind of chaos comes to light. Talking ravens? Doppelgangers? Skinless monsters? Magic? His real father? Everything Jared thought he knew is challenged by ‘supernatural’ revelations about his family, and himself. Now a (very) old acquaintance of his father is after him, and Jared doesn’t know why.”The next slide, titled, “So whats so great about it?” continues: “Trickster is a brilliant showcase of Indigenous talent both in front of and behind the camera. That also probably explains the show’s understanding and appropriate handling of certain heavy themes, like how substance and alcohol abuse is linked to intergenerational trauma and colonialism. It’s a really well-woven tapestry of ancestral stories of spirits and history, into modern day life. The show’s style choices, beats, evoked emotions, plot points, effects, and sprinkled in humour is all top notch. As interesting as the ‘supernatural’ elements are, it is the characters and relationships that absolutely sell the show; at its heart, Trickster is a coming of age, family drama story.”The next few slides focus on characters in the show. This slide is titled “Jared (Joel Oulette)” and is accompanied by a photo of a young Indigenous man with short dark hair, looking at the camera with his head tilted. He is wearing a grey t-shirt and a maroon jacket. The text reads, “Jared is 17 going on 30, having to be more of a parent to his parents than the other way around. On top of that, he’s got his own inherited unhealthy coping mechanisms, too. Too busy trying to survive to think about much else, and has no time to deal with the explainable weird shit he’s starting to see. Good boy, best boy, boy needs a damn break but can’t seem to catch one.”Slide 5: titled “Maggie (Crystal Lightning)” accompanied with a picture of an Indigenous woman with long dark hair. She is wearing a necklace and a horizontal striped yellow shirt. She looks at the camera with a small smile. The text reads, “Jared’s mom Maggie had a hard childhood, as a second=generation residential school survivor. She’s also a super powerful Witch born with a natural talent, able to hear spirits. Unfortunately she’s got some very unhealthy ways of dealing with all that shit. Would kill and die for her son (and has), even if she’s struggled with the whole raising him part.”Slide 6: Titled “Wade, AKA Wee’git (Kalani Queypo)” and has a photo of an Indigenous man with short dark hair. He is staring at the camera and has a necklace with a gold band around his neck. The photo has dramatic lighting so his face has deep shadows cast on it. The text reads, “Jared’s biological father who’s rolled his way back into town… but for what reason? Oooh. Is actually a super old Trickster out of legend, but sure as hell doesn’t act like it most of the time. Thinks he’s the coolest person in the room, but in his defense he kinda is. Also thinks messing with his son is a good way to get to know him. Allergic to telling the whole truth.Slide 7: Sarah (Anna Lambe)Photo is of the actress in costume, a thin, brown-skinned woman with long brain hair in braids, wearing a jean jacket that says “2 spirit.”Text says:“Sarah describes herself as “hard-core resistance with a dash of sparkle,” (and that pretty much sums up why I love every scene with her, you know?). A foster kid who’s gone from home to home her whole life, on a mission to find her birth parents. Moves into town and immediately begins to take on the oil and gas industry’s pipeline in progress. Has Jared high key swooning.” Slide 8: “Crashpad” (Nathan Alexis)Photo is of the actor in costume, a fat, brown-skinned person with short hair, wearing a t-shirt and hoodie.Text says:“Jared’s only real friend, true confidant and piece of stability. By real friend I mean REAL friend, pretty sure buddy would gift Jared the moon if he needed it…… Although that friendship is tested with revelations about Jared’s identity and Power. Poor guy is dragged into a world of Tricksters, Witches and Ancients when he just wants to get his game on.” Slide 8: Contains multiple characters and no pictures. Text says:Sophia (Georgina Lightning): Sophia is a residential school survivor with a lot of troubles in her past, including the wrongs she did to her daughter, Maggie. Has since rebuilt herself a peaceful life, and would like her daughter and grandson in it, too. Also a skilled Witch with a collection of knowledge passed down from Elders. Phil (Craig Lauzon)Jared’s dad is a soft-hearted guy who’s stuck in a hard place, off work on disability and with a history of painkiller addiction. Low key jealous of how cool Wade is compared to himself. Georgina (Gail Maurice)WHAT is UP with this woman???There’s definitely more going on with Georgina and her pals than meets the eye. Slide 9: Text says “Also… it features a kickass soundtrack!” and contains a collage of album covers, most of which feature indigenous people and imagery. Artists include Buffy Sainte-Marie, Tanya Tagao, and Blackfire. The final image is a screenshot of an anonymous Tumblr as which says, “Is Trickster good? Asking so I can start watching.” end id.] -- source link
