Peter van de Velde - Galleys and other ships at anchor in a natural harbor near a fortified town - oil on canvas, Height: 50 in (127 cm); Width: 61.2 in (155.4 cm)Peter van de Velde or Peter van den Velde (Antwerp, 1634 – Antwerp, 1723/24), was a Flemish marine painter who was active in Antwerp. Some art historians believe that the long lifespan attributed to this artist could hide two artists operating under the same name, possibly a father and his son.Peter van de Velde is known for marines in stormy seas and his coastal landscapes, often of Oriental harbours. He monogrammed his work with P.V.V. or PVV.A large part of the paintings attributed to Peter van de Velde seem to be mass produced and suggest that he worked as a painter in the employ of art dealer Gilliam Forchondt. -- source link
